On a cool autumn morning, 38,377 marathoners started their day in Fort Wadsworth, preparing to embark on a 26.2-mile journey through the streets of New York. Many racers met their goals and fulfilled their dreams at the 39th running of the marathon.

Due to the three wave starts, runners enjoyed more space in the start villages and less crowding on the course.


Runners rested on the ground at Fort Wadsworth before the race. Although it was windy at the start, sunny skies and made it a great day to race.

Runners turned off of the Queensboro Bridge and descended upon First Avenue --the rowdiest portion of the race.


Fred's Team, a group that raises funds in support of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, had lively orange cheer zones to motivate the runners.


Marathoners forged past the Wall and into the Harlem Miles, where entertainment was increased this year to get runners through the challenging patches.
