No one felt the chilly, blustery conditions more than the men and women in the professional wheelchair race. Would the finish line ever come? Last year's champions, Kurt Fearnley and Edith Hunkeler, forged ahead to win again, despite what the weather and their bodies were saying.

In Fort Wadsworth, the wheelers lined up for the start: (from left) Shelly Woods of Great Britain, Hiroyuki Yamamoto and Masazumi Soejima of Japan.

Defending champion and 2006 course record-holder Kurt Fearnley led the pack on the big climb up the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge.

It was anyone's race in Staten Island, as the athletes fought an extreme headwind to get to Brooklyn.

Aaron Gordian of Mexico and Kurt Fearnley of Australia fought for the lead through the eight-mile mark.

Fearnley made his move to pass Gordian on a flat section in Brooklyn, and he kept the lead to finish in 1:44:50.

Soejima moved into second place after the half and held his ground to finish in 1:46:10.

Defending champion and 2007 course record-holder Edith Hunkeler was ahead the entire race; she broke the tape in 2:06:42.

American Amanda McGrory grabbed the runner-up spot just after the halfway mark and finished in 2:11:25.

Shelly Woods, Christie Dawes, and Diane Roy vied for third. Dawes prevailed, with Woods fourth and Roy fifth.

This was Fearnley's third consecutive win in New York, and he remarked that the race was the pinnacle of his year.

This was Hunkeler's fourth win in four starts at the ING New York City Marathon.

Fearnley and Hunkeler agreed that their seasons—which included Beijing Paralympic marathon victories—ended here in New York.
