WMM Reacts to New Rule on Women’s World Records
Boston, September 20, 2011— The IAAF World Championships ended on Sept. 4, but at least one bit of action appears to be just heating up. In Daegu, South Korea, the IAAF Congress held in conjunction with the championships passed a motion to change the standard by which women athletes achieve world record performances in road races. The new criterion states that only times earned in all-women competitions would be classified as world records, and that performances in mixed conditions would now be called world bests. In a mixed-gender race, it is possible for men to pace women to quicker times. [Read more]

Top American Distance Runners to Debut at ING New York City Marathon
New York, August 10, 2011—The "Freshman Class of 2011"—Bobby Curtis, Ed Moran, Lauren Fleshman, and Molly Pritz—will make their marathon debuts at this year’s ING New York City Marathon. This quartet of American standouts continues a tradition set by compatriots Alberto Salazar (1980), Deena Kastor (2001), Meb Keflezighi (2002), Marla Runyan (2002), Dathan Ritzenhein (2006), Kara Goucher (2008), Jorge Torres (2009), and Shalane Flanagan (2010) of making their marathon debuts in NYC.
Ten Years After 9/11, Families of Flight 93 Heroes Will Run the ING New York City Marathon
New York, July 25, 2011—To mark the 10th anniversary of 9/11, 24 members of the Families of Flight 93 Runners charity will run the ING New York City Marathon 2011 to remember the heroes of Flight 93 and to raise awareness and funds for the Flight 93 National Memorial site in Shanksville, PA. The group will be an official charity partner; other 9/11 charities include Tuesday’s Children and the Nicholas Rossomando 9/11 Memorial Scholarship Fund.
Marathon Wins Gabarron International Award for Sport 2011

New Zealand’s Kim Smith Will Run in New York on November 6
American 5000-meter record-holder Molly Huddle will run NYRR 5 on November 5
New York, June 1, 2011—Coming off a heartbreaking race at April’s Boston Marathon, where she led for 17 miles before a leg injury forced her to withdraw, Kim Smith of New Zealand will make her marathon return at the ING New York City Marathon 2011. The marathon will be the second of two planned appearances in New York this year for Smith, as she’ll also run the NYRR New York Mini 10K on June 11, as her first race since Boston.
Trio of Champions Will Run the Marathon on November 6
New York, April 27, 2011—On ING New York City Marathon Opening Day 2011, New York Road Runners announced the return of a trio of champions to this year's race: 2010 winners Gebre Gebremariam of Ethiopia and Edna Kiplagat of Kenya and 2009 champion Meb Keflezighi of the United States.
