When will the application be available?

Who can apply?

Anyone who will be 18 or older on Sunday, November 7, 2010, may apply for entry.* Only one application per person. Any fees processed due to individuals submitting duplicate applications are non-refundable.

Please note: Handcycle applications will only be accepted from persons who have been active bona fide members of Achilles International since July 1, 2009.

*Guaranteed entry applications will be accepted beginning on January 25, 2010.

Lottery Applications

Lottery applications will be accepted until 11:59 p.m. on March 15, 2010.

NYRR will hold the lottery drawing for all applicants in late-March.

Most international entrants come through our Official International Travel Partners [ITP], so only a portion (including athletes with disabilities) will be selected through the lottery drawing.

Guaranteed Entry Options

Guaranteed entry applications will be accepted from January 25, 2010 at noon until March 15, 2010 at 11:59 p.m.

The following groups are eligible for guaranteed entry to the ING New York City Marathon 2010:

  • Members of New York Road Runners since January 31, 2009, who completed at least nine NYRR-scored, qualifying races, and who have volunteered for one event, during the calendar year 2009. NYRR members can check their member history by clicking here. Handcyclists seeking entry under this provision must also be active bona fide members of Achilles International since July 1, 2009.

  • Entrants in the ING New York City Marathon 2009 who canceled prior to the race. Athletes with disabilities seeking entry under this provision must have been accepted in the 2009 marathon through a lottery.

  • Those who have completed 15 or more New York City Marathons.

  • Those who have applied but been denied entry for the last three years in a row (2007, 2008, and 2009), and who did not secure an entry through alternative methods in those years.
If you meet the above requirements, special instructions will be sent in January. If you don't receive the instructions by the end of January, apply with the application after January 25, 2010. After you apply, send an e-mail to marathonmailer@nyrr.org with a short note mentioning which of the 4 above guaranteed entry options qualify you for guaranteed entry.

* All times must be run at, or faster than, the posted time. Times achieved outside of NYRR races must be verifiable online.
** Your age on the day of the qualifying race.

You must have met the appropriate qualifying time between January 1, 2009 and January 31, 2010 (2010 NYC Half-Marathon and Boston Marathon 2010 times will also be accepted). Include the race name and date with your application.

Once selected, charity entrants may not cancel without prior approval from their charity.

Guaranteed Entry Through Official International Travel Partners

(For those who live outside the United States) Guaranteed entry along with the purchase of a marathon package may be available through an Official International Travel Partner [ITP] in your country or territory. You may only apply with an ITP in your country or territory; ITPs cannot accept applicants from other countries. ITPs cannot accept handcycle applicants.

An entrant who has purchased a "Marathon Package" with an ITP and wishes to withdraw from the race must contact their ITP directly. The ITP will inform NYRR of an entrant's decision to withdraw. Any withdrawn entrant will not receive guaranteed entry into the ING New York City Marathon 2011 or subsequent ING New York City Marathons.

This fee is required for all applicants. This fee is non-refundable and will be processed when we receive your application.

Entry fees will be charged immediately upon acceptance in the lottery (drawing in late-March 2010).

*You must include your NYRR member number on the application. If you wish to join with your marathon application, you may do so (you will save $36).

Non-U.S. Residents (including Puerto Rico)

Entry fees will be processed only for people who have been accepted into the ING New York City Marathon 2010. Once you have been accepted, your entry fees are non-refundable and non-transferable under any and all circumstances, including, but not limited to, cancellation of the event or of your participation.

NYRR Annual Membership (optional)
US $40*
If you live in the United States and are already a member, or if you join when you complete the marathon application, you will save $36 on your marathon entry fee. You'll also be eligible for numerous benefits and savings. Join now by checking the appropriate box on the marathon application. NYRR membership is not required for acceptance, nor does it guarantee acceptance into the ING New York City Marathon. NYRR membership fees are nonrefundable and will be processed immediately.

Official Transportation to the Start

The transportation fee is included with marathon entry.

To ensure your on-time arrival at the marathon start, NYRR strongly recommends that you use the official marathon transportation. Official buses are the only vehicles allowed into the race staging area on Staten Island. Additional transportation information will be provided upon acceptance in mid-March.

For runners in the International Travel Partners program, your transportation is arranged as part of your marathon package.

Payment Procedure

All fees must be paid using the same method of payment, either credit card or debit card. We accept American Express, MasterCard, and Visa.

Once you have been accepted into the ING New York City Marathon, all fees are NONREFUNDABLE, under all circumstances, even if you cancel.

Those who are accepted but cancel by November 6, 2010, will be eligible for guaranteed entry into the 2011 race (but will still have to pay the 2011 fees). Charity entrants may not cancel without prior approval from their charity.

Credit Card Payment
To pay with a credit card, simply write your credit card number and expiration date (must be April 2010 or later) on the entry form and check the appropriate boxes. Euro cards are not accepted.

  • Upon receipt of your application, we will process the US $11 fee.
  • Other race fees will be processed only if you are accepted into the race.

After You Apply

If you are accepted into the race, we will process your fees and acknowledge your acceptance by e-mail and on your online profile page. Event updates will be communicated in e-mail newsletters and on your profile page. We will mail participant materials in the summer.

In mid-October, all entrants will be e-mailed a registration card that is required (registration cards must be printed), along with government-issued photo identification (or a passport, required for international entrants), to pick up your race number and scoring d-tag to race day at the ING New York City Marathon Health and Fitness Expo. The expo takes place November 4-6 at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in Manhattan.

NYRR Member Awards

To be eligible for NYRR member awards, including member team awards, you must have been an NYRR member since May 2, 2010, and you must have completed at least six fully scored NYRR races as a runner between November 3, 2009, and October 31, 2010.

Rules of Competition: Rejection of Entries and Disqualification of Entrants

The ING New York City Marathon is organized and conducted under USA Track & Field rules and regulations. Entrants must also comply with New York Road Runners (NYRR) rules and all applicable rules and regulations of the City of New York, its agencies and departments, including the Department of Parks & Recreation.

No skates, strollers, or animals are permitted in the marathon. The use of headphones is strongly discouraged.

NYRR reserves the right to reject any entry and to disqualify and bar any individual from the Marathon. This rejection/disqualification may be based on, but is not limited to: violation of the aforementioned rules; unsportsmanlike conduct; non-payment of race fees; competing with an unofficial number; competing with an official number or d-tag assigned to another person; transferring or attempting to transfer an official number or d-tag to, or to obtain such number or d-tag from, another person; being paced during the race by a person not entered in the Marathon; accepting assistance from non-race participants; crossing the finish line without having completed the entire course; and providing false information on the race entry form. Individuals disqualified from the Marathon will be removed from the race results and may be barred from future Marathons and other NYRR events.
