Daily Tip #7: Plan Your Race-Day Outfit

Friday, October 21

Temperatures at past New York City Marathons have ranged from the 30s to the 80s; the race has seen snow, rain, and hot sun. The early-morning hours at Fort Wadsworth are almost always chilly, so bring warm gear that you can check as baggage in your clear UPS bag or donate for recycling before you enter the corrals. For the race itself, dress in layers and use common sense. Follow these tips from toe to head:

Shoes: You should be breaking in a fresh pair of kicks by now. If not, purchase them asap! Aim to log at least 50 miles in your shoes before November 6—enough to break them in but not wear them out.

Socks and underwear: These should be comfortable and warm but not bulky. Most important, be sure that nothing that touches your skin can chafe. Avoid 100-percent cotton clothing (see below).

Shorts or tights: A good rule of thumb is to wear shorts if the temperature is 50 degrees or more, and tights if it’s colder. Zipper pockets are handy for carrying energy gels or chews, emergency cash, and a MetroCard.

Shirts and jackets: In sub-50-degree weather, you may want long sleeves. Synthetic fabrics wick moisture better than cotton does. Check out the 2011 ASICS Marathon Collection for all your training needs.

Gloves and caps: A baseball-style cap will shield your eyes from the sun. Gloves are light and warm, and they can be tucked into your waistband as you get warmer.
