Daily Tip 16: What to Do After the Marathon

Thursday, November 3

In just three days, you'll be approaching the marathon finish line! Here's what to do after that:

  • Remember to smile for the brightroom cameras. Then grab your HeatSheet™ and wrap it around you to preserve body heat as you start to cool off. Take your food/fluid bag, and try to replenish a bit as you walk to the baggage-claim area.
  • Claim your baggage, then exit Central Park and get into warm, dry clothing. Have a prearranged plan to meet up with family and friends, preferably away from Central Park to avoid the crowds.
  • Continue to hydrate, fuel, and gently move. Replacing lost fluids and calories (especially carbs and protein) will enhance your recovery, notes Official NYRR ING New York City Marathon Training Program nutritionist Lauren Antonucci. Try to get in about 200 calories within 30 minutes of the finish. Walk and stretch gently to ease muscle soreness.
  • Plan to visit Marathon Monday at the Marathon Pavilion on November 7 starting at 7:00 a.m. to shop for finisher merchandise, get your medal engraved, and enjoy Stretching Stations with Hospital for Special Surgery experts. Be sure to buy copies of the special New York Times marathon section, which includes names of all finishers with times under 4½ hours.
  • Apply to run the ING New York City Marathon 2012. The application will open at noon EST on November 7. If you’re in NYC, Purchase personalized gifts to Honor Your Marathoner http://www.ingnycmarathon.org/store/honor_gifts.htm
