Races Within the Race
With a field of over 38,000 runners, it might seem hard to stand out in the ING New York City Marathon unless you are the first man or woman across the finish line. But in this race, many runners have the chance to be winners. That's because NYRR organizes races within the marathon. These events put the spotlight on various individuals and groups of runners, as well as on causes and communities important to New York City. Once again this year, there are multiple special events taking place within the ING New York City Marathon.
ING Run for Something Better
Childhood obesity has become a serious health concern across the nation. ING Run For Something Better is tackling the issue by helping kids become fit through free, school-based running fitness programs. Individual donors can make an impact on these programs with their donations and fundraising efforts. Since 2006, over half a million dollars has been raised by individual donors with gifts of $10 or more. Thanks to our donors, ING Run For Something Better is able to reach more schools and more kids all over the country. Join the fight against childhood obesity today by making a donation today. Please wear your orange laces proudly to show you are "tied" to supporting kids' fitness! [Learn More]
The Foot Locker Five Borough Challenge
A race within the ING New York City Marathon, the theme of the Challenge this year is "Marathon Moms." Five athletes have been selected to participate: one runner from each of the five boroughs of New York City. The five athletes selected will be featured in the WNBC marathon telecast and will receive a Foot Locker Five Borough Challenge uniform. The Foot Locker Five Borough Challenge is sponsored by Foot Locker, the official athletic retailer of the ING New York City Marathon. [Marathon Mom Bios]
