Volunteer Guidelines
a. Volunteers at the start and finish must be at least 18 years of age.
b. Volunteers at the course aid stations must be at least 16 years of age.
c. You will receive your volunteer credential when you check in. Wear this to remain on site for the day. You will also receive your volunteer T-shirt and poncho at check-in.
d. Dress in layers. It is likely to be cool in the morning, warmer during the day, and cool again in the evening. We advise you to bring gloves and a hat.
e. Bring a snack. Some volunteers in restricted areas in and around Central Park will be provided with a sandwich and water, and other volunteers will be in locations where food and beverages can be purchased, but either way, you may wish to pack a snack bag or container.
f. You may not drink alcohol or smoke during your volunteer shift.
g. Wear a waist pack to carry essential items (such as a photo ID, a snack, a hat, and gloves). Do not bring backpacks or pocketbooks, as there is no storage area. For security reasons, all bags are subject to search.
h. Do not bring cameras, radios, video equipment, or portable TVs. It gets very crowded during peak time, and we don’t want you to lose or damage anything. Also, because you will be working all day, you will not have time to use these items. We are not responsible for lost or stolen items.
i. Family members, children, and friends may not accompany you unless they have also signed up in advance as volunteers. We will not be able to accommodate “walk-ups.”
j. You should be prepared to answer a variety of Marathon-related questions throughout the day.
k. You must commit to working all of your assigned hours. The smooth performance of each area depends on all volunteers remaining on site for their full shift. Please do not ask to leave early.
